Lake Rotoroa, New Zealand
Click on the pic to go back to New Zealand Story

Lake Rotoroa is every bit as stunning as Lake Rotoiti and definitely worth the visit. The lake is a bit of a drive from Nelson Lakes National Park's main centre at St Arnaud and not as busy (not that I saw that many people at the main centre).

I liked the sound of the Porika Lookout walk at the northern end of the lake and went equipped with a good leaflet picked up from the visitors centre, with details of the walk. Again there are a number of options for length of walk in the area so something for everyone.

The Porika Lookout walk takes around 1-3 hours depending on how fit you are, how long you stop to look at the view, and whether you make a (more interesting) circular walk out of it by taking in the Old Porika Stock Route (which I chose to do). What can I say. It was a little arduous in places but every inch, every drop of sweat, every aching muscle, was well worth it for the walk through the beautiful fern filled forest, and stunning views of the lake and surrounding countryside at the top. Absolutely awesome!
