lake volta at akosombo dam, Ghana

Lake Volta, the largest man-made lake in the world was created by damning the River Volta. On the day we visited there was a definite eerie feel about the place. The lake itself and surrounding countryside are very beautiful and had we had more time we would have spent a bit more time in the area.

The hydro electric plant generates electricity for most of Ghana and a few surrounding countries like Burkino Faso, Togo and Ivory Coast (if I remember rightly).

When you arrive at the dam site you have to get a ticket from the reception desk. Don't bother trying to get to the dam wall if you don't have a pass as security is tight. If you arrive in a taxi (rather than a private car), you'll either have to walk (not recommended for non-masochists) or hire the little yellow car and accompanying guide to take you up to the dam wall itself (for a bit of extra dosh). You get an informative little tour that lasts about an hour (however I was there for the view so didn't listen all that carefully - shame on me).
